The Last Straw – a Story
Some time back we worked in Miami and went to visit family & friends in a freezing cold Europe. We had some time on our hands and decided to head to beautiful Thailand for some sun, culture and Thai food. Usually we would have taken care of our own arrangements, but this time we did what we would usually never have done – let a travel agency arrange our trip. The offer-price we received was industry average for economy class tickets and a four star hotel accommodation. Well, off we went:
The flight experience in keywords: a plane not designed for long distance (inadequate seats, no entertainment system, had to stop over in Muscat to re-fuel) – a broken toilette (out of 2) for the duration of the flight – an unscheduled stop 450 km from our home airport because of low fuel on the way back.
The four star hotel experience in keywords: mold and filth everywhere – sick and hospitalised guests because of very poor hygiene conditions.
The travel bureau/tour operator experience in keywords: Wrong and mediocre information. A friendly but helpless representative of the agency on site – a travel bureau/tour operator who knew about the conditions beforehand but who did not change the supplier (hotel), likely because of profit (on a side note, the hotel remained in the program of the travel bureau the following year).
Our conclusion back then – THAT CAN’T BE IT, THIS CAN AND MUST BE DONE BETTER.
Well, this was the last straw for us, and we decided to create a product and service, using our know-how, which does the quote of Hans Christian Andersens “TO TRAVEL IS TO LIVE’ justice. It is not just about ‘selling tours’, it is more about designing a great experience.
